FEELING HOT HOT HOT

Welcome back friends and family. If you sang the title, you are my people. Like most of you, the heat has been ridiculous lately. When we made our plans to move down here, we figured we would be big and tough and live with out ac. We had backup ac in the camper if we were miserable. Well....our cat Hawthorne got really sick. We was vomiting quite a bit. He chose the weekend to do this. We barely slept the first night. Constantly having to clean up messed. The next day he seemed to be doing better. Went several hours, then started in again. Not as often, but enough to bother us. We were so worried with this heat and humidity that we was going to get dehydrated. Our dear friends loaned us an old floor model ac. Was it cool in here? No, but it was 15 degrees cooler than outside. Some days with the heat index it was 110. We knew it would get hot here, but dang. We broke down and had to order a floor unit for ourselves. Another expense we did not plan on. It works better than the one we barrowed, but it will not be as cool as the camper. We wanted a window unit, which would have worked better, but none of our windows will accept on. We could have cut a hole in the wall, but none were small enough for in between the 2 x 4. Rick did not want to do major reconstruction. Anything is better then being outside in this.
Monday rolled around and we took our boy to the vet. We cried all the way there. My cats do not like car rides. They were home bodies. The staff at the clinic was very sweet to him and us. We gave them all the details of what he was and was not doing. They took him back to take a look at him. They came back and stated he is healthy. They suspect he either had an upset tummy or had a hair ball he couldn't not pass. The prescribed him 2 meds. Fortunately the bill was $77. I expected a lot higher. Just another bill to take care of. We cried part of the way home. We pulled into the driveway and he knew we were home. He dived out the door and went straight under the conex. He managed to pull himself out of his collar. We finally got him out of there. I have never seen a cat pant. Poor baby. We got him inside, and in true Sadie fashion she has done nothing but hissing and bating at him. I swear she is bi polar. He doesn't like him going outside. She does not like going out, so we leave her in.
Hawthorne was not a good patient in taking his medicine. He is so chill when we clip his nails. You would have thought we were killing him. I had to syringe some liquid down his throat. The other was a paste. He wouldn't eat it. They told us to smear on his paws if he won't eat it. He barely groomed his paws. They told us to put it on the roof of his mouth. Yeah right. I smeared it on his lips. He did not like that, but got it into him. It took a few days for him to feel better, but he is our boy again. he was never lethargic. He just was not eating and drinking like he should. He is our talker, but be barely meowed. His purr is like a motor. He did not do much of that. We knew we were in the clear when he started talking, purring and trying to sneak outside.
With this heat wave, projects were put on hold. We basically did only the things we needed to. Picking produce and watering. Fixing meals and dishes. That is about it. I have baked some bread. That was interesting. With the humidity, my dough remained sticky. I gave up adding flour. It turned out yummy. I made some crustless pumpkin pie. I got the recipe from my friend Brenda. The carrots were starting to bolt, so we pulled them all. The beets all got pulled too, they were getting munched on. So, I did some canning. Not a very good harvest of each, but we got something out of it. I even had to break down and do some laundry a few times.
We have been blessed with several days with storms blowing in during the afternoon. It dropped the temp by 30 degrees and saved me from watering the gardens. Speaking of gardens....My new herb garden is not doing well at all. I started seeing some sprouts, but one of the rain we got was a down poor and flooded the area. Our brassicas are still producing. The brussel sprouts have started, but we will see. We might just eat all the leaves and call it good. The pumpkin plants are doing well, but one of them is only producing male flowers. grrr. The cucumbers are in bloom. The green beans are going to town. Our second planting is not far behind. The sweet corn is sparce, but we can hope. I reseeded the zucchini. I tried new seeds and planted out the rest of the bum packet. I guess I will get a crap ton of them. Most of the seeds germinated. We are still proud of the progress we are making in the garden for a first year. Next year will be better.
We have gotten to spend some time this some of our neighbors/friends. It is nice to sit and chat and help out one another. Ty and Shan loaned us the ac. We sent them home with some pine berry plants and medicinal herb plants. We also go to see the wood mill in action at his daughter's property. He already said we can take some of the slab wood and pine shavings. Awesome. Bertha has given us some fresh tomatoes, cucumbers and squash and goji berry plant. So exciting. I sent her with pine berries and medicinal herb plants as well. I over seeded on purpose, so sharing the wealth. Chad stopped by too. He was out of state for a few months. It was glad to see our friend back. We has a lot of work to catch up on his land. The one thing about this lifestyle, is you put good out there, you will receive it back. We barter time and products. Plus it helps the soul to help others too. Even if you can only just give them some advice of information on where to find things to help them along their way.
It has been nice to have to run the ac for a few days now. We are gearing up for our next push on projects. Yesterday and today we had appointments and business to take care of. Tomorrow we are staining the rest of the kitchen that has been waiting patiently on us. We need to cage our berry plants. We also hope to get all of our cast iron pans hung up on the wall. A screen door is in our future as well. Sometimes we just can't get great circulation in the cabin. We open that door and it is heaven. We have just put the cats on their leashes and open the door up until the bugs start coming in from the lights. Milling shelves is also in our near future. The cabinetry in the bathroom is up next as well too.
Thank you for taking time out of your day. We all hope you had a great Independence Day. We just stayed home and enjoyed sitting outside. I also wanted to give a big Happy Birthday to my daughter Allison. She turned 25 today. My babies are getting all grown up. We are still working out the details in order to go to Michigan in August. The new ac has messed up the automatic systems around here. We will get it figured out. We are so looking forward to seeing everyone one and meeting the new grandbaby.
